The Roller Coaster of Leadership Love

Leadership is a paradox. On one hand, we idolize our leaders, placing them on pedestals, admiring their charisma, vision, and ability to inspire. On the other hand, we are quick to turn our backs when they falter, when their human flaws become apparent, or when they fail to meet our often-unrealistic expectations. This love-hate relationship with leaders is not just a phenomenon observed in the United States but is prevalent across many Western cultures. But why do we place so much importance on leaders? Why do we shower them with admiration, only to withdraw our support when they fall short?

The Romance of Leadership: A Cultural Obsession

In many Western societies, particularly in the United States, there is a deeply ingrained belief in the power of leadership. We are a leader-centric culture, where leadership is often romanticized. The term “Romance of Leadership,” coined by Jim Meindl, captures this phenomenon. We attribute significant successes and failures to leaders, often overlooking the contributions of others involved in the process. This cultural obsession is evident in the way we compensate and treat corporate CEOs, who are often seen as the primary architects of their companies’ successes.
